Wolfgang von Goethe's house
Reconstructed to its original glory, Goethehaus is the birthplace and family home of much-loved German writer and philosopher Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. View the esteemed desk where the young Goethe penned his famous The Sorrows of a Young Werther in 1774, as well as many of the family’s books, paintings and other belongings. Set across four levels, the house is full of historic character, from the squeaky floorboards to the original Goethe family furniture.
Goethehaus not only offers a fascinating insight into the life of one of Germany’s favourite writers, but also of the extent of damage that was inflicted on Frankfurt during World War II. View pictures of the house after it was destroyed during bombings and learn about the painstaking recreation in the aftermath of war.
Historic Frankfurt charms visitors to this central square, once the medieval heart of the city. Beautiful buildings from the 14th and 15th centuries, many of which have undergone reconstructions, surround Romerberg including the town hall, Romer, with its pretty facade. In the middle of the square sits the 17th-Century Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen ‘Fountain of Justice’, with the Goddess Justia facing the Romer.
Romerberg in winter melts the heart of even the most hardened Christmas Grinch, as the dark night sky fills with twinkling lights and the aroma of roasted chestnuts and mulled wine at the annual Christmas markets wafts through the air.
