See the Buddha at Tochoji Temple

Fukuoka's most-prestigious temple dates back to 806 AD and is still a major landmark. Beyond its attractive architecture, Tochoji Temple is most-notable for housing the remains of Lords of the Kuroda clan, as well as significant heritage artefacts including a wooden statue that dates back more than 1,000 years.

Another major attraction of the temple is the Fukuoka Daibutsu, the largest seated Buddha statue in Japan. Standing 10.8 metres tall and featuring intricate carvings, the statue took four years to complete and was added to the temple in 1992.

Nights out at Nakasu

The historic district of Nakasu, which connects the city of Fukuoka with the port of Hakata, was originally established to entertain samurais and visiting merchants. Today the area’s patrons are far more diverse. You're welcome to mix with locals and fellow travellers at chic Nakasu bars, before hitting the clubs. Treat your tastebuds to new flavours at food stalls or head to the Riverain complex for late-night shopping.

If you're visiting Fukuoka during festival season, Nakasu is where you can find all the action, with annual events such as the Nakasu Jazz Festival taking over every August.
