Ride the Pearl River

Stretching for over 2,000 kilometres, the Pearl River is the third-longest river in China. Although once over 2,000 metres wide, the River is today only 180 metres from bank to bank. Its name comes from a round, smooth rock found on the riverbed that resembles a large pearl.

You can stroll along part of the 23-kilometre walkway built on the water’s edge during the day or enjoy the dark water reflecting the city lights at night. Take a river cruise to learn about the historic buildings lining the banks including China’s first military academy, Huangpu and the attractive Xinghai Concert Hall.

Chen family temple

A place of both history and future, the Ancestral Temple of the Chen Family was both for offering up sacrifices to ancestors and studying. Constructed using funds raised solely by Chen family members, the Temple was built to encourage future generations to study hard for a good life.

Today the complex houses the Museum of Folk Arts and Crafts. Comprised of no less than nine halls, six courtyards and 19 other buildings, the Temple displays traditional Chinese rules of symmetry. It's also home to an impressive collection of animal carvings from timber, pottery, stone and brick.
