Attractions near the Courtyard Halifax Downtown

Explore Nova Scotia’s Maritime History

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is the largest of its kind in Canada and place you can visit to explore Nova Scotia’s maritime history. The museum’s most interesting attraction is the permanent Titanic exhibit. When ‘the unsinkable ship’ sank in 1912, the survivors went to New York but the bodies of those who died were recovered and brought to Halifax.

The exhibit is a fascinating glimpse into the stories of those who perished in the disaster and the brave crew who battled rough conditions to recover them. Many Halifax families kept pieces of the ship and onboard artefacts for generations. These now form part of this fascinating display.

Bottoms up on a brewery tour

Next door to the Courtyard Halifax Downtown, Alexander Keith’s Brewery is one of the oldest breweries in Canada. Scottish-born Alexander Keith first opened his Halifax brewery in 1820. Keith had learned the brewing and malting business from his uncle, and by 1863, his brewery was producing 100,000 litres of ale a year.

Keith became mayor of Halifax and the company is still going strong long after his death. Taking a theatrical guided tour of the Alexander Keith Brewery is a fun outing, where you’ll have the chance to taste some great ales and cider.
