Step aboard HMCS Sackville
Take a tour of the HMCS Sackville, a World War II warship now restored to former glory as a museum. The Sackville is Canada's oldest fighting warship still in existence, and a reminder of what occurred in the war. A vast number of brave Canadians gave their time and their lives in World War II. Onboard the HMCS Sackville, you can see the living and working conditions experienced at the time.
The ship’s resting place in Halifax is a fitting one, given the city harbour's importance in the war effort. During the winter the ship is moved to the navy's care for upkeep, but during summer it sits beside the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and can be visited any day of the week.
Visit the Halifax Citadel
The Halifax Citadel is one of five military sites around Halifax that has been granted historic site status. Collectively these batteries and forts are known as the Halifax Defence Complex.
Halifax's position on the east coast made it an important harbour during early colonial days and a citadel was vital to keep it safe. There were four different structures built on the site of the current citadel before one was found that would stand the test of time.
Halifax Citadel is open year-round. Between May and October the fort is enlivened with two historic British army regiments and bagpipe recitals. As well as standard tours, you can also participate in evening ghost tours for an atmospheric exploration.
