A double dose of history
Hobart is home to more than 90 buildings classified by the National Trust, and two of the most magnificent are within walking distance from your hotel. Take a short stroll towards the waterfront and stop in at Hobart’s historic Town Hall. Built in 1866, the Town Hall takes its architectural cues from Rome’s Palazzo Farnese. In its lifetime, the Town Hall has housed the public library, police headquarters and municipal court, welcomed royalty and international dignitaries, and hosted some of Hobart’s most extravagant civic balls.
A three-minute stroll from the Town Hall will take you to St David’s Cathedral. This neo-Gothic building is thought to be the finest work, outside of England, by famed Victorian architect, George F Bodley. It is considered to be one of the most perfect cathedrals in Australia, based on its proportions, layout, scale and design.
See a show at the Theatre Royal
Opened in 1837, the Theatre Royal is Australia’s oldest working theatre and has been home to Hobart’s best live performances for more than 170 years. The Theatre has a distinct old-world charm, featuring an exquisite chandelier that dominates the ceiling, stone walls carved by early convicts, ornate wood carvings and balustrades, and traditional rich red velvet seats.
The Theatre offers a culturally rich roster of live performances including plays, music, comedy, opera, dance, acrobatics and family entertainment. Guided tours of the Theatre are also available.
