The beauty of the Botanic Gardens

Just two kilometres from the heart of Hobart and a five-minute drive from your hotel is the Royal Tasmanian Botanic Gardens. Overlooking the Derwent River, the Gardens showcase a stunning array of native and exotic trees, plants and flowers.

You’ll discover the historic gardener’s cottage, surrounding walls built by convicts, the world’s only subantarctic greenhouse and the site of the old Hobart Zoo, which was home to the world’s last living Tasmanian tiger. Wander at your own pace and bring your own picnic for a cheap lunch. There is also a restaurant and shop on site, and guided tours are available.

Take a brewery tour

A five-minute drive from your hotel will get you to a utopia of beer: the Cascade Brewery. The country’s oldest brewery, Cascade was established in 1832 and continues to be one of the leading producers of premium beer in Australia.

The building itself is a stunning example of Gothic architecture set amidst three acres of impressive heritage gardens. Take a tour to learn how beer is made and if you’re so inclined, enjoy a tasting. There is also a heritage tour available – you’ll learn the history of the brewery, visit the Cascade museum and stroll around the gardens. There is an on-site bar, cafe and restaurant for refreshments and larger meals.
