The Jewel of Hobart
Battery Point is one of the most sought-after locations in Hobart. The area was originally named for the battery of guns that lined the point, designed to protect the Hobart coastline. These days the guns are gone and Battery Point has a delightful village atmosphere and an air of quiet sophistication. There is a selection of tearooms, bakeries and restaurants close by, so take the time to have a chat and chew with the locals.
Take a stroll to Arthur Circus, which lies at the heart of Battery Point. Australia’s only Circus (circular street), this unique ring of tiny cottages dates back to the early 1800s and has remained largely unchanged. These modest homes that were built for officers of the military now give the area a quaint, charming atmosphere. In the centre of the circle is a traditional ‘village green’, modelled on those in England.
Tour the Penitentiary Chapel
Take a five-minute drive from your hotel to Hobart’s Penitentiary Chapel, one of the city’s oldest and most unique colonial buildings. In order to allow free citizens to worship in the chapel among the convicts, it was cleverly designed with sloping floors that kept the free citizens hidden from prisoners’ view.
The chapel is made up of the chapel itself plus a series of courtrooms, holding cells, gallows and interconnected tunnels. Beneath the chapel floor were 36 solitary confinement cells where convicts were kept in chains. Take a guided tour and learn more about the fascinating history of the site including convict history, trials and executions. Rreturn at night time for a spooky ghost tour guided by lamplight.
