Have a wildlife adventure

A trip to the zoo could be the tropical adventure you’re searching for during your stay in Honolulu, and it’s only a few minutes away from your hotel. Nestled between the slopes of Diamond Head and bustling Waikiki, the Honolulu Zoo is set on 17 hectares of countryside and is home to more than 1,000 animals, bird and reptiles.

Enjoy hours of intrigue and excitement with exhibits including the 5-hectare African Savannah, the Tropical Rainforest and the Pacific Islands. You’ll see species ranging from Komodo dragons and orangutans to Sumatran tigers. Little ones will delight in petting llamas and cows at the dedicated Children’s Zoo on the complex.

Fire up to visit the volcano

Take a hike to Hawaii’s most recognised landmark – the 300,000-year-old volcano known as Diamond Head or Le’ahi. Embark on a hike to the summit, but be prepared. At just 1.2 kilometres in distance it’s not far, but the steep and strenuous sections make it quite a challenge. However, if you can muster the energy you’ll be rewarded with magical panoramic views.

At the top you’ll find a fire control station built in 1911, historic bunkers and a circa 1917 navigational lighthouse. Take a moment to survey the scene from this ancient perch, which gives you a picture-perfect postcard view of Koko Head to Wai’anae. You may even catch a glimpse of the ocean’s majestic humpback whales if you’re here during the winter migration.
