Take the trail into history
Just steps from your hotel is famous Waikiki Beach, but there’s more to this iconic strip of coast than golden sand and glistening water. A great way to truly get to know this stunning region is by walking the Waikiki Historic Trail, which highlights 23 landmark sites.
Beginning at the Royal Hawaiian Centre you’ll learn about Hawaiian artefacts, discover the sacred Wizard Stones of Kuhio Beach and journey to King’s Village to see a statue of Duke Kahanamoku, known to locals as the ‘father of modern surfing’. Make sure you bring a towel because you’ll have the enviable choice of swimming at Waikiki, Kuhio, Duke Kahanamoku, San Souci and Queens Surf Beaches along the way. Keep an eye out for the bronze surfboards that tell historical stories along the trail.
Have a wild day out
A trip to the zoo may be just the wildlife you’re searching for during your stay in Honolulu, and it’s only a few minutes from your hotel. Nestled between the slopes of Diamond Head and Waikiki, the Honolulu Zoo is set on 17 hectares and is home to more than 1,000 different animals and birds.
See everything from Komodo dragons and orang-utans to elephants and African animals, plus there’s a special Children’s Zoo where kids can pet llamas and cows. The zoo is open daily and you can find it at the corner of Kapahulu and Kalakaua Avenues.
