Museum of Innocence
This fabulous little museum came about in tandem with the book of the same name created by Turkish Nobel Laureate Orhan Pamuk. Centred around the stories of two Istanbul families from the 1970s to the early 2000s, the Museum brings the love story to life, displaying items of clothing the characters would have worn, as well as things they would have seen and used.
Even if you haven't read the book, the Museum offers a true insight into the culture of upper-class Istanbul family life over the past few decades. Situated amongst antique shops and narrow streets in the Beyoglu district, it's just a 10-minute drive across the bridge from the hotel.
An historic park
Dating back to the earliest days of the city, Istanbul's Byzantine Hippodrome has been a focal point through the ages, providing a space for chariot races, processions and other entertainment. During the glory days of Constantinople, the Hippodrome was the heart of the city's political and sporting life, decorated with obelisks and statues.
Today the Hippodrome is a popular landscaped park and meeting place, adorned with the remnants of its former glory. In the centre, you'll find the well-preserved Egyptian pink granite Obelisk of Theodosius, complete with carvings of the 4th-Century Roman Emperor and his family watching chariot races.
