Instanbul's modern meeting place

The heart of modern Istanbul, Taksim Square is a bustling hub of activity and a popular meeting place surrounded by hotels, restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Just a short stroll from the hotel, the Square serves as the main transportation hub for the metro and bus services, providing links throughout Istanbul.

A symbol of the secular Turkish Republic, the large Monument of the Republic built to honour leaders of the struggle for independence has dominated the middle of Taksim Square since 1928. If you’re visiting during New Years Eve or during special events, you can find a party amongst the large amount of locals and visitors celebrating in the area.

Basilica Cistern

The astonishing 6th-Century Byzantine Basilica Cistern is a huge cistern sitting underneath the Stoa Basilica, opposite the Blue Mosque. It's supported by 336 grand Roman columns, many of which have come from recycled Pagan temples. A highlight for visitors is spotting the upside heads of Medusa on several of the columns in the middle of the Cistern.

Feel free to marvel at the ancient architecture of this subterranean structure, which once held 80,000 cubic metres of water, serving the Great Palace. Enjoy the serenity of the mysterious cavernous cistern, which is especially cool and welcoming on hot summer days.
