Be awed by Islamic architecture
Dating back to 1909 and situated at the meeting of the Gombak and Klang Rivers, Jamek Mosque is one of the oldest and most significant mosques in Kuala Lumpur. Featuring Moorish architecture blended with Indo-Saracenic styling, this mosque was designed by the same architect who built the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, situated opposite to the Mosque. The resemblances are striking and both buildings offer great photo opportunities.
Masjid Negara, located on Jalan Perdana, is a good example of a modern twist on the traditional mosque. The architects of this mosque replaced the standard minaret with a 16-pointed star concrete roof; its undulations resembling an open umbrella. The design has yet to be repeated across Malaysia – giving some idea of how this modern interpretation has been accepted.
Take a tour of Little India
A little further afield you’ll find Little India, the epicentre of Indian culture within Kuala Lumpur. Discover a great range of restaurants and cafes serving the best traditional Indian food in the city, all set amidst bustling surroundings.
But besides feasting on delicious curries, there are a number of things to do in and around the area. Take a free walking tour of Brickfields, known as the brick-making neighbourhood in the early days of Kuala Lumpur. City Hall offers the Brickfields Guided Walking Tour, which takes you past many of the city’s iconic sites and historical landmarks built throughout the 20th Century.
