See the iconic Lapu-Lapu Shrine
Standing 20 metres tall, this commanding bronze statue was erected in tribute to Datu Lapu-Lapu, a native leader who defeated Spanish soldiers. The landmark is preserved for its historical significance and is set on the site that the first Philippine battle took place in 1521.
Situated in a park next to the shores of Punta Engano, the monument is a popular attraction for locals and tourists alike. Students from all over the region come to learn of its history, while visitors like to stroll around the area, take photos, and catch a sea breeze. Inside the park area you can browse a range of charming souvenir stores before indulging in one of the seafood restaurants nearby.
Visit the historic Magellan’s Cross
Established by Spanish and Portuguese conquerors in what is now downtown Cebu, Magellan’s Cross marks the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines. Dating back to the early 1500s, the cross is named after the explorer Ferdinand Magellan. Housed in a chapel next to the iconic Basilica of Santo Nino, the original cross is encased in a wooden cross for protection, as people were known to chip away parts of it believing they held divine powers.
The cross is an ideal site for Cebu travellers wanting to learn of the island’s religious heritage. Inside, be amazed by the intricate paintings on the chapel’s ceiling that portray stories of Cebu’s history.
