Cathedral of St Nicholas
If historical religious sights are your thing, head the centre of the medieval heart of the city to explore the exquisite Church of St Nicholas. Overlooking Pogacarjev Square, this has been a religious site since the 13th Century, with the present Romanesque Baroque twin-towered masterpiece built in the 18th Century.
Inside the cathedral, the ornate gilded, pink marble and white stucco interiors mesmerise. Admire the superb Baroque ceiling and dome frescoes, the alter angels and the carved choir stalls, as well as the many niches containing statues of bishops and saints. A recent addition to the church and a huge crowd pleaser, are the magnificent carved bronze doors commissioned to commemorate the Pope's visit to the city in 1996.
Ljubljana's largest city park is a joy to discover, with rolling hills, wooded areas and manicured lawns stretching out right in the heart of the city. Renowned for their love of outdoor pursuits, it is hardly surprising that the Slovenian capital has such gargantuan parklands allowing city dwellers to easily immerse themselves in nature.
Hiking and biking are the best ways to explore the park, but if you're not up for physical exertion, there are numerous picnic spots to sit and enjoy the scenery. The park is home to a number of cultural attractions including the city's zoo, the Museum of Modern History, and the picture-perfect 17th-Century Tivoli Manor, housing the International Centre of Graphic Arts.
