Be inspired by Muhammad Ali
The award-winning Muhammad Ali Centre is a museum dedicated to the life of sporting legend Muhammad Ali. Born in Louisville in 1942, Ali received numerous awards for his humanitarian work – the Amnesty International Lifetime Achievement Award being just one of them.
As well as an ever-changing array of temporary exhibits, the museum uses dramatic multimedia presentations, interactive displays and fascinating artefacts to teach visitors not only about Ali’s career as an athlete, but also how he used his influence to create change in the world. Ali, recognised globally as a symbol of peace and goodwill, co-founded the museum with his wife Lonnie to inspire visitors to be great and do great things.
A day at the races
Louisville is home to the world-famous Kentucky Derby, so while you’re here take the opportunity to spend a day doing what the locals love to do – go to the races.
Horses have been racing around the track at Churchill Downs since 1875, and there are several different tours available to explore its history. The exclusive ‘Barn and Backside’ tour is your chance to visit more than 1,400 horse stalls that line the back of the track, and see the horses at rest and in training. Between March and November, the ‘Early Morning’ tour is your best bet to see horses take to the track, while the ‘Inside the Gates’ tour takes you to the exclusive areas of Churchill Downs that are not normally open to the public.
