Visit the Kentucky Derby Museum
A trip to this museum is the next best thing to watching horses thunder towards the finish line at the Kentucky Derby itself. Exhibits take you on a journey from the birth of a foal all the way to the Winner’s Circle.
On display are more than 20,000 artefacts and materials ranging from items owned by famous trainers and winning jockeys, to newspaper articles and handwritten notes collected by noted turf and sports writer, Jim Bolus. The Kentucky Derby, modelled on England’s Epsom Derby, has been getting hearts racing since 1875. This Grade One Stakes Race for three-year-old thoroughbreds rewards the winning owner handsomely – and the horse probably gets an extra serve of oats, too.
Take a haunted historic tour
The beautiful old homes of Louisville built between 1880 and 1905 go a long way towards what makes this city such a delightful place to visit. Exploring the area’s rich history will be most rewarding when you have a local guide leading the way.
The ‘America’s Most Exuberant Neighbourhood’ tour will take you through the streets of Old Louisville to admire the architecture and discover the tobacco titans, bourbon barons and racetrack legends who called these houses home. For a tour of a different kind, wait until darkness falls and join the ‘America’s Most Haunted Neighbourhood’ tour – the eerie old mansions, parks and churches here are said to be such hubs of paranormal activity that the neighbourhood is known as the spookiest in the country.
