Discover hidden traboules in Old Lyon
In the 19th Century, the city districts of Vieux Lyon and Croix-Rousse were home to many local silk weavers. With workshops at the top of these hilly districts, secret covered passageways known as traboules were built to quickly transport goods to the textile merchants in the streets below.
Passage Thiaffait, now the most-famous of these traboules, has been restored to its former glory and transformed into a vibrant hub of creative art, fashion and jewellery designers. Take a stroll through the aptly-named Village des Créateurs (Village of Creators), to find some local Lyonnaise craftspeople at work.
Visit the City of Stars
If you take a short bus ride south of Lyon to the small town of Givors, you can find an architectural masterpiece of the 20th Century. Constructed between 1976 and 1982, the Quartier des Etoiles (City of Stars) is a development of about 370 apartments and public amenities including a theatre and a kindergarten.
Its unique design, in the shape of stars, grants apartments large outdoor terraces and a lot of natural light. Commissioned by the mayor of Givors at the time, the development was part of a plan to revive the city centre. You can join a guided tour run by the tourism office to learn about the development’s history and unique design concepts.
