Shop on prestigious Calle de Serrano

Madrid’s most celebrated shopping strip, Calle de Serrano, is a wide boulevard perfect for casual strolling, but it’s the excellent shopping that really draws the crowds here. This main street, which runs through the upmarket area of Salamanca, is lined with beautiful 19th-Century buildings, some of them housing boutiques such as Chanel, Prada and Gucci. But don’t think this street is just for the shopping elite – more moderately priced options like Zara and local labels Uterque and Bimba y Lola have a spot here, too.

Calle de Serrano is also home to some lovely laid-back cafes that offer the chance to rest weary legs and refuel with coffee and classic Spanish fare.

Chow down in charming Chueca

Dining in Madrid is all about tapas, and if you want to experience this unique style of feasting with some locals, there’s no better place than the lively neighbourhood of Chueca. Packed with bustling bars and fashionable boutiques, this area has a very authentic feel – just don’t be surprised if you find yourself starting dinner at 11pm along with most of the locals.

Tapas places here are cheap, cheerful and delicious, and where you are likely to be offered a few plates of local specialties like crunchy croquettes with your refreshing beer. Places such as El Tigre are favourites for their simple, tasty food and unbelievably cheap prices.
