Visit the Saint Clement Aqueduct

Aqueducts were one of the earliest forms of modern plumbing to be built in many of Europe’s cities. The Saint Clement Aqueduct in Montpellier was built in the 17th Century to transport water from the Saint Clement spring, about 14 kilometres away.

When the aqueduct enters the city, its final 800 metres are above ground, supported by two levels of large arches. The area beneath these arches is The Arches district and a fresh fruit and vegetable market is held there twice each week. For those who prefer to self-cater, this is the perfect spot to pick up fresh local produce.

Discover Montpellier’s best shopping

Montpellier offers excellent shopping. While well-known brands such as Zara, Gap, Benetton and Galeries Lafayette occupy the popular Polygone Shopping Mall in the centre of town, there are more-unique local offerings elsewhere.

In the Ecusson district, head to the narrow streets surrounding Rue de la Loge where you can find stylish clothing, shoes, accessories, leather goods and home wares with a local twist. For something a little more special, Rue Saint Guilhem offers designer French clothing and children’s stores, as well as the exquisite Maison Regionale des Vins et des Produits du Terroir, roughly translated into 'The House of Regional Wine and Produce'.
