Explore historic Glover Garden
Look down over picturesque Nagasaki Harbour from this serene mountaintop, the best-preserved foreign settlement in the city. Established as an enclave for European traders in the 19th Century, the Minami-Yamate mountainside houses some of the finest examples of western-style buildings in the region, especially in the picturesque Glover Garden.
You can explore the attractive gardens and period buildings that served the needs of Nagasaki's foreign settlers and visitors before Japan opened its borders. Glover Garden is a remarkable example of a self-sustained community. The old trading posts and store houses have been preserved, along with public facilities including a bank, church and hospital.
Visit Japan's oldest church
One of the most-notable historic buildings in the Minami-Yamate mountains, Oura Catholic Church is the oldest surviving Christian church in Japan. Its wooden structure and many of the original French stained-glass windows survived the bombing of Nagasaki in 1945, and subsequent restoration work brought the Church back to its former glory.
Oura Catholic Church still operates as a place of worship for local and visiting Christians, and is also a significant historical landmark. The Church is open to visitors seven days a week and is located just 200 metres from the hotel.
