Attractions near the Best Western Premier Hotel Nagasaki
Tour Nagasaki's ghostly island
Take a boat trip to Hashima Island for a unique insight into the region's industrial past. Commonly known as 'Battleship Island', because of its mighty sea walls and numerous structures that once served as housing and facilities for more than 5,000 workers, this mining site formerly boasted the greatest population density anywhere in the world, but today it is an eerie ghost town.
Guided tours leave from Nagasaki Port and offer views around the remarkable island, which was swiftly abandoned in 1974 when the mine closed down. On the way there and back you get to enjoy coastal views of Nagasaki and see the thriving local industry including the giant ship-building facility operated by Mitsubishi.
Pay tribute at Nagasaki Peace Park
One of Nagasaki's most-visited and most-sobering attractions is the Peace Park, which commemorates those who died when the atomic bomb 'Fat Man' was dropped on 9 August 1945. In addition to the memorial, the Park serves as a reminder of the people’s yearning for peace.
The colossal bronze Peace Statue watches over the Park and the other monuments, which list the names of the people who lost their lives that disastrous day. If you're in town during the anniversary of the bombing, visit the Peace Park to see a touching memorial service.
