Exploring historic Dejima Island

It may no longer be an island following extensive land reclamation, but Dejima still retains a distinct character separate from the rest of the city. This fan-shaped artificial island sitting in Nagasaki Harbour was the only legal foreign settlement in Japan during the country's 200 years of isolation and was home to a small, but significant population of Dutch traders.

Several original buildings constructed by those traders still stand today, while others have been faithfully restored by architects based on paintings produced during the settlement period. These paintings and other artefacts can be viewed in the Dejima Museum of History, housed in an old Protestant seminary.

The steps to Suwa Shrine

Nagasaki is hardly lacking in impressive shrines and temples, but the large hilltop Suwa Shrine is particularly worth visiting. You need to climb 250 stairs to reach the highest point, where you can enjoy scenic views of the surrounding area and a serene atmosphere away from the noise of the city.

The Suwa Shrine is best known for being the focal point of the Kunchi Matsuri Festival, which takes place every year. This renowned celebration sees hundreds of locals from nearby neighbourhoods take part in colourful processions complete with traditional dragon dances and music.
