Cross the Spectacles Bridge

Anyone in a hurry could pass by the historic Megane Bridge without realising its significance, but it's definitely worth slowing down and appreciating the memorable architecture. Considered one of the most important bridges in Japan, this 17th-Century crossing over the Nakajima River once offered vital road access to Nagasaki's trading ports and Dejima Island.

Built by Chinese monk Mokusunyoujo, this stone bridge was unique in Japan at the time and was soon given the nickname 'Spectacles Bridge', because of the appearance of its double arches when reflected in the water. The design was imitated a lot in the years after, notably with the construction of Double Bridge at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.

The colourful Confucius Shrine

Nagasaki has always been one of Japan's most cosmopolitan cities and its sizeable Chinese population has contributed to many of the city's most popular landmarks including the only Confucius Shrine outside of China to be built by Chinese hands.

Originally completed in 1893, the Shrine was destroyed in 1945 and was subsequently rebuilt as an important site for the local Buddhist community. The Museum of Chinese History and Palace Museum are located on the Shrine's grounds, and if you visit during Chinese New Year or other special events, you can see the temple and surrounding streets glowing with the colour of thousands of lanterns.
