Walking through Bryant Park

With its lush green lawns and manicured flowerbeds, Bryant Park is an oasis amongst the city's skyscrapers. This much-loved green space has a long and varied history, dating back to 1776 when George Washington and his troops crossed right through the area.

The Park was closed, excavated and rebuilt in the 1980s, when a section of the New York Public Library was being built underground. You can find a classic carousel, an open-air library, an outdoor games area and a number of dining options, not to mention the range of events held throughout the year.

Touring the New York Public Library

For more than a century the New York Public Library has been providing books, information and facilities to locals. This is the largest public library system in the USA, with almost 90 branches, 51 million items, and more than 18 million visitors each year. Its historical collections include unique treasures such as a letter from Columbus dated in 1493, in which he announced that he had found the New World.

This architecturally stunning building is more than just a place for books. The best way to discover the highlights is to join one of the guided tours. A range of different tours are available including ones that focus on the building and others that explore the historic collections.
