Waterfront festivities

Spring through to Autumn is the perfect time of year to enjoy the picturesque waterfront city of Newport. Entirely surrounded by spectacular harbours, it’s no surprise that festivals on the foreshore dominate the social calendar during the warmer months.

In June, seafood lovers flock to the Great Chowder Cook-Off and the Sunset Music Festival. September brings the Newport Waterfront Irish Festival and the Taste Of Rhode Island, which features fresh regional flavours. And October celebrates the renowned Oktoberfest right on the waterfront. The Newport Yachting Centre is open year-round, so no matter when you visit, you can enjoy local food, a vibrant atmosphere, a relaxing afternoon cruise or a more challenging sailing adventure.

International Tennis Hall of Fame

American tournament tennis originated in Newport in 1881 and the US Open tournament was played on the same grounds of the International Tennis Hall of Fame until 1915. In fact, tennis is still played on the courts today by both casual and competitive players.

Given its prestigious history, Newport is home to one of the most extensive sports museums in the world. Housed in the historic Newport Casino, the museum showcases the development of tennis, from its 12th-Century origins through to today’s esteemed international circuit. The museum houses an extensive collection of memorabilia and information including more than 15,000 objects, 5,000 books and 100,000 significant photographs.
