Lifestyles of the rich and famous
Monaco is second only to the Vatican City in Rome as the smallest country in the world, but don't let its size fool you. Famous for its annual Monaco Grand Prix and for being a tax-free haven, Monaco is home to the rich, the famous and even its own royals. Perched on a small bay overlooking the azure Mediterranean Sea, Monaco is a picturesque maze of streets filled with sports cars, flashy restaurants and grand mansions.
Wander the streets to indulge in a little star spotting, check out the yachts moored in the harbour and try your luck at the gaming tables in the Casino Monte Carlo. Located only a short drive east along the coast from Nice, you can easily visit this tiny country on a guided tour or via local public transport.
Visit Cimiez Convent on the hill
The final resting place of celebrated artist Henri Matisse and home to an impressive collection of historic paintings and frescoes, the Monastere de Cimiez is rich in culture and history. This convent is a short bus ride from the centre of the city and located on a hill with spectacular views.
With parts of the building dating back to the 17th Century, the convent includes the Musee Franciscain, which is decorated with 17th-Century frescoes. The Monastere de Cimiez is also home to 15th-Century paintings by local artists, the Brea brothers.
