Kayak into mysterious sea caves
In Phang Nga Bay there are about 40 steep, craggy limestone islands. Many people don't realise that there are sea caves ('hongs') hidden within these islands.
The best way to see the mysterious hongs is by sea kayak. You can paddle your small, sturdy kayak into the caves and discover collapsed caverns, with their ceilings open to the sky, surrounded by steep limestone cliffs. This is a hidden, unspoiled environment; a tiny microcosm of nature that is a world away from the resorts of Phuket.
Visit a Buddhist temple
The Buddhist temples in Thailand are truly remarkable in their intricacy. These adorned and gilded religious buildings are very important, since most Thais are Buddhist.
The most prominent temple in Phuket is Wat Chalong. Locals come here to worship, but the temple is also open to visitors. As a sign of respect, make sure you take your shoes off and avoid wearing revealing clothing. In the Grand Pagoda there is a shrine said to encase a splinter of bone from Buddha and in the west hall stand two statues of a local old man who found guidance at the temple and won many lotteries. You never know; you might get lucky too.
