Take a drive through Julatten
The main focus for visitors to Port Douglas is of course the Daintree Rainforest to the north, but be sure to also explore the Julatten area around the back of Port Douglas. This quiet area offers rewarding driving and hiking through lush grassland and beautiful eucalyptus forest.
There are fields of sugar cane and banana plantations as the landscape transitions between the tropical coast and the drier savannah of the interior. Julatten is a great place to escape from the humidity of the coast for a day or two and there is even a friendly country tavern in this tiny community.
Charming St Mary’s by the Sea
This tiny wooden church may seem out of place in the tropical holiday paradise of Port Douglas, but the 100-year-old wooden church is one of the only remaining testaments to the pioneering history of the area. It replaced an earlier church that was destroyed by a cyclone in 1911 and the local community has worked hard to look after it in the years since then.
Wander through the heavenly gardens and into the cool interior where the gorgeous stained glass windows feature tropical flowers. Through the altar window you can see the sparkling waters of the Coral Sea and the soft blue of the surrounding mountain ranges.
