Village culture

Port Douglas prides itself on retaining its tropical village personality – you won’t find a single fast-food chain restaurant in town. Take time to explore its variety of fashion boutiques, local artist galleries and designer stores in the centre of town too.

A number of award-winning cafes and restaurants use only local produce to create an inspiring mix of delicate cuisines. Cultural festivals take place throughout the year, including the Carnivale festival in May, as well as multiple food and wine events celebrating local suppliers.

A Mediterranean castle and gardens

A little over two hours south of Port Douglas, visitors can escape to the Mediterranean-inspired Paronella Park. The ruins of a magical Spanish castle are set here amid lush landscaped gardens overlooking the tropical countryside around Innisfail.

An architectural masterpiece, the historic castle was designed and built by Catalonian sugar-cane farmer Joseph Paronella. Opened to the public in 1935, the theatre once showed films every Saturday evening, and the hall was a favourite for dances. Today visitors can explore the ruins, outbuildings and a number of walking tracks in the grounds. Enjoy a picnic in the surrounding rainforest, visit the adjacent Mena Creek Falls and lose yourself in the romance of yesteryear.
