Immerse yourself in colonial grandeur
Elizabeth Bay House was known as ‘the finest house in the colony’ when it was built between 1835 and 1839. Still standing today, it's steeped in grandeur from a bygone era. Just take a seven-minute walk from the hotel to Onslow Avenue in Elizabeth Bay and you can find the house overlooking the harbour, where it was originally set on 22 hectares of gardens.
The elegant rooms are lavishly furnished and the library houses selections from the Macleay botany and insect collections. The house is open Friday to Sunday and you probably need to spend at least one or two hours there to really take in all the fine details.
Australian art appreciation
Walk a few minutes in any direction from the hotel and you can soon find one of many high-quality art galleries open to the public. The closest is The Cross Art Projects at Kings Cross, focusing on contemporary work and curatorial projects. Artery Aboriginal Art on Darlinghurst Road is bursting with the colours of Indigenous Australia and proudly specialises in affordable contemporary Aboriginal art.
The Michael Reid Gallery in Roslyn Gardens, Elizabeth Bay, is open Wednesday to Saturday and has a wide range of pieces on display. At Woolloomooloo there is the Artspace Visual Art Centre, Australia’s leading international residency-based contemporary arts centre.
