Attractions near the Hotel Astoria
An ancient cemetery
Venture into the Jewish Quarter of Prague (Josefov), where you can visit the Old Jewish Cemetery located about 750 metres from the hotel. Used from the 15th to the 18th Century, the Cemetery holds about 12,000 visible tombs. Unable to create more space, a lot of the gravestones had to be cramped together and bent awkwardly, creating a surreal and eerie appearance.
You can walk through the Cemetery at your own pace, but be prepared for company as this is one of Prague’s most popular attractions. Keep an eye out for some of the more famous tombs like those belonging to chief rabbi of Prague, David Oppenheim and philanthropist Mordecai Meisel.
Museum and concerts in a synagogue
The Spanish Synagogue, built in 1868, sits in Prague’s Jewish Quarter about 600 metres from the hotel. The synagogue possesses beautiful architecture from Moorish influences including domed ceilings. The inside contains stained-glass windows, along with painted and carved Islamic motifs and elaborately decorated galleries that give the synagogue an almost royal appearance.
The synagogue now operates as part of the Jewish Museum, so you’ll be able to see fascinating exhibits relating to Prague’s Jewish community. You can also attend concerts in the evening that feature classical music. Walking tours are available and take you to numerous attractions in the Jewish Quarter including the Spanish Synagogue.
