Attractions near the Southern Sun Pretoria

Explore the National Zoological Gardens

Also known as Pretoria Zoo, the National Zoological Gardens are an absolute must-visit during your time in South Africa. Located on 85 hectares of land, this is the country’s biggest zoo and the only one with national status. Among its many attractions and enclosures, be sure to visit the inland marine aquarium with its exciting reptile park and the one-of-a-kind insectarium before saying hello to the rare white tiger. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can join one of the zoo's overnight camping tours and be regaled with tales of traditional folklore and interesting facts.

The zoo also houses the National Research Foundation and plays a significant role in the protection and conservation of various threatened animals.

Visit the Voortrekker Monument

Standing on a hill just outside of Pretoria you’ll find the imposing Voortrekker Monument. This impressive structure was built to honour the Voortrekkers who left the Cape during the period of 1835 to 1854 and set out to venture through the country in what’s now known as the Great Trek.

Once part of South Africa’s apartheid past, the 40-metre tall granite monument has been transformed into a welcoming tourist destination. Wander through the Hall of Heroes, Cenotaph Hall and the historical museum housed in the basement. With a camera in hand, capture the stunning views from the monument’s peak, before browsing the gift shop filled with charming souvenirs and decorative items.
