Roman baths and Michelangelo magic
Just a stone's throw from the hotel, you can discover the ancient public Baths of Diocletian. Built between 298 and 306, these were the grandest of all public baths, originally covering more than 12 hectares. Forming part of the National Museum of Rome, today there are three parts to the baths: the ancient ruins of the original Roman bathhouse, a basilica, and a small museum featuring exhibits of Roman life.
You can enter the Basilica of St Mary of the Angels and the Martyrs via an ancient wall of the bathhouse. Feel free to bask in the relaxed ambience of this tranquil church, which was designed by Michelangelo.
A must-see basilica
One of Rome’s ‘big four’ major basilicas, Abbazia di San Paolo Fuori Le Mura (St Paul Outside the Walls) is a huge and architecturally beautiful church, located at the burial place of St Paul. Originally dating back to 324 AD, the grand church has been built up over the centuries and almost entirely rebuilt after a fire in 1823. Revel in the pretty facade and rows of columns, as well as the splendid mosaics inside, some of which date back to the 5th Century.
Often less crowded than other grand religious attractions, as it’s a little further out of Rome's city centre, St Paul Outside the Walls rewards you with a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere in which to appreciate one of the world’s most magnificent churches.
