Relax in Waikite Valley Thermal Pools

Rotorua is situated in volcano country. Along with the obvious dangers, this also brings benefits, such as naturally heated pools. Pure spring water fills a number of pools at Waikite Valley Thermal Pools, each with a slightly different temperature. The main pool, big enough in which to swim a few laps, sits between 35 degrees Celsius and 38 degrees Celsius. Some of the smaller spa-style pools are slightly warmer – between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius.

Waikite Valley Thermal Pools is the only attraction of its kind in New Zealand that uses 100 per cent pure and naturally heated thermal water. Add in the views offered from the hillside location, and this attraction is one of the most relaxing places to visit in Rotorua.

Visit the buried Te Wairoa village

In June of 1886, the village of Te Wairoa was completely buried when Mount Tarawera erupted for more than four hours. The fatal eruption took more than 150 lives.

Part of Te Wairoa has been reconstructed. Visitors to the site can discover what life was like before the eruption. An onsite museum displays artefacts that have been recovered through careful digging, and guided tours are also available. This is a great way to learn about life in the area, Maori history, and the cause and effect of volcanic eruptions.
