A lazy beach holiday
Swakopmund has blossomed into a popular holiday destination thanks to a beautiful waterfront location that offers respite from the scorching Namib desert. Embracing its coastal position, the city offers a handful of beach resorts that allow you to take full advantage of warm, golden sands and an array of outstanding ocean views.
Independent brands abound along the water with names such as The Beach Hotel, Strand Hotel Swakopmund and Swakopmund Sands Hotel. All are located close to the water and feature comfortable, modern style. If you're looking for a more intimate experience with lower costs, you may want to consider a local inn or B&B.
Swakopmund: adventure capital of Namibia
Thrill seekers rejoice! Swakopmund is widely known as the adventure capital of Namibia and offers up a smorgasbord of high octane tours. From helicopter tours and skydiving to sandboarding and quad-biking the dunes of the Namib desert, there is ample opportunity to try something a bit different.
Swakopmund features a great range of hotels from which to plan your adventures. At the upper end, the Hansa Hotel and Swakopmund Hotel draw on the German heritage of the city, providing services to book adventure tours. The Hotel Deutsches Haus and Hotel Eberwein are great mid-range options, while the Prinzessin Rupprecht Residenz and Dunedin Star Guest House are more budget-friendly.
From the Namib Desert to Etosha National Park
If you have a bit of time, it's well worth considering a trip outside the city limits to enjoy some of the unique areas that surround Swakopmund. Witness the majesty of the colossal Dune 7 in the Namib Desert, see the swarms of Fur Seals along Cape Cross or head inland for an Etosha safari.
You can stay at one of the many hotels in the city and plan a day trip to surrounding attractions, but if you'd like to stay overnight at any of the surrounding areas, accommodation is definitely available. The Cape Cross Lodge is a unique experience in the Skeleton Coast Park, or consider a night in the Onguma Bush Camp while on safari in Etosha.
