Visit Magnetic Island

Just off the coast of Townsville, Magnetic Island is a location revered for its nature, diving and dining. It’s Queensland's sunniest area, with more than 320 days of sunshine each year. Best of all, the island is just a 20-minute ferry ride from the pier near the hotel.

Half of the island is listed as national parkland, with areas of eucalypt forest, hoop pines and rainforest. Kilometres of walking tracks provide opportunities to spot native wildlife including rock wallabies, koalas and a huge variety of birdlife. Magnetic Island lies within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, so it has excellent diving and snorkelling opportunities. Rare sea animals such as the dugong are often spotted around the island.

Meet the animals at Billabong Sanctuary

Billabong Sanctuary houses local and endangered animals, and offers you a safe way to get up close to the wildlife. The best option is to buy a bag of seed at the door. As soon as you enter you'll see why, as a number of kangaroos will bound over and gently eat from your hand.

There's even a chance to feed a crocodile with a chunk of meat on a bamboo stick, which you dangle over the water for one of the crocs to leap up and snatch out of the air. You'll be less than a metre from them, but thankfully you're separated by a fence. There are also opportunities to cuddle and get photographs taken with wombats, koalas, snakes and lorikeets.
