Walk up Plimmer Steps
Plimmer Steps are an important part of Wellington's history. They take their name from John Plimmer, who played a pivotal role in the city's development in the 19th Century. Known as the father of Wellington, Plimmer was an early English settler to New Zealand. His entrepreneurial sense brought a lot of money to the area and he later served on the city's council.
At the bottom of the steps you’ll find a statue of Plimmer with his trusty dog Fritz. It marks the path they were said to walk together daily. Each winter Fritz is knitted a waistcoat by an anonymous donor. The steps provide access to Lambton Quay, and lead into the bustling shopping and business strip.
Enjoy Bohemian chocolates
New Zealand is well known for its food and drink production, but you may be surprised to hear that Wellington is home to a fine chocolate maker.
Found on Featherston Street, Bohemian Chocolates makes fresh batches daily. Established by a former pastry chef from the Czech Republic, Bohemian looks to take the best from European confectionery and give it a New Zealand twist. Bohemian runs monthly chocolate classes, so you can learn how the products are made. Spaces fill up quickly, so be sure to book ahead of time.
