Visit the Old Government Buildings

Located in the popular Lambton Quay area, the Old Government Buildings shows off some of the most majestic architecture in New Zealand. Finished in 1876, the building is one of the biggest wooden structures in the world and is classified as a New Zealand Historic Place. Because of its wooden construction, fire safety concerns led to this being the first place in the world to have a smoke-free policy.

Although part of the building is leased to the Victoria University Law School, the bottom floor and the gardens are open to the public. You can see displays detailing government use, the cabinet room and rare New Zealand plant life.

Enjoy the Karori Sanctuary Experience

If you want to see wildlife in Wellington, one of your best options is a trip to Zealandia, also called the 'Karori Sanctuary Experience'. Zealandia tells the story of New Zealand from nature's perspective. You're able to learn while you see indigenous animals wandering freely around native plant life. Although, free guided tours are included with entry, visitors are welcome to explore by themselves.

Sadly, a lot of the local flora and fauna have disappeared over the past few hundred years. Zealandia aims to conserve as much as possible. One of the highlights of a visit is the takahe wetlands, an area with the colourful native takahe found only in New Zealand.
