Explore the Myanmar markets

For a true Yangon experience, head to the hectic laneways of the Bogyoke Aung San Market. This sprawling market built in 1920 is popular with locals and tourists alike, and is one of the best places in town to purchase authentic items. The market offers traditionally made puppets, tapestries, woodcarvings and clothing. Choose a vibrant fabric and have a tailor fashion you a personal piece.

For authentic food, head into Chinatown which is filled with boisterous locals and regional food specialties. Take a seat in a café and watch the world whizzing by, or get involved in the action, purchasing produce or tasting delights from street-side stalls.

Discover treasures at the National Museum

Yangon’s National Museum is the perfect place to seek a quieter refuge from the busy streets of the city. Its permanent collection includes an impressive 26-foot (8-metre) high lion throne called a Sihasana. The piece once belonged to the last king of Myanmar, King Thibaw Min, who was in power between 1878 and 1885.

Other items of significance that showcase the extravagance of the former royals include jewel-encrusted beds, gold floor rugs, ivory chairs and a large collection of spectacular ceremonial dresses. There are also exhibits presenting natural history, prehistory and artworks from national artists.
