Attractions near the Thamada Hotel

Pagoda at the heart of history

Myanmar has had a turbulent history, especially in recent years. Sule Pagoda, located in the heart of the city and just a few blocks from your hotel, now serves as an important reminder of the past. Dating back more than 2,000 years, the pagoda stands 48 metres tall and sits at the heart of a grid of streets, planned by the British when they rebuilt the city in the 1880s.

More recently it was the site of protests by Buddhist monks against the anti-democratic government. Said to bring good fortune, head inside the temple to pour water over the Buddha designated to your birthday.

Visit Yangon’s biggest market

Rivalling the popular Bogyoke Aung San Market, Theingyi Zei Market offers a wide array of goods at cheaper prices. Located just a few blocks west of Sule Pagoda, and within walking distance of your hotel, Theingyi Zei Market is Yangon’s largest market.

Known for its collection of traditional herbs and medicines, the market also offers textiles and household goods. This is the perfect place to pick up unique souvenirs and locally made items. The secret to Myanmar women’s silky smooth hair can be found here too – a traditional herbal shampoo made from Tayaw shrub bark.
