Attractions near The Governor’s Residence

Enjoy the sunset from Sakura Tower

In the heart of Yangon is the 100-metre tall Sakura office tower, which was built in 1999. On the 20th floor is a chic rooftop bar and restaurant offering panoramic views of the city and surrounding country. It's a great spot for a sunset drink and to marvel at the city lights coming to life as the sun drops below the horizon. If you stay for dinner, the menu offers a variety of local and international dishes.

One of the iconic sights of the city skyline is the 2,000-year-old Sule Pagoda in the city centre. Further in the distance, the Shwedagon Pagoda is also impressive when its gold exterior shines in the fading sunlight. You can also see the Yangon River surrounding the city.

The world’s largest gems

A short drive north from the city centre stands the government-run Myanmar Gems Museum and Gems Market. This museum is home to a remarkable permanent collection of various gems and stones that are local to the region.

The most impressive item inside is the world’s largest sapphire, which measures a whopping 6.7 inches. Other notable items include the world’s largest jade boulder, star sapphire and rough ruby stones. You can purchase gems at the accompanying market.
