Frequently asked questions
Le Boat is a top houseboat hire company, offering boats that you can self-drive on rivers, lakes, canals and other waterways in Europe and North America — including the Rideau Canal in Canada, Loch Ness in Scotland and the River Thames in England.
No prior boating experience is required to book Le Boat rentals. Upon arrival, a Le Boat staff member will give you an in-depth briefing and an approximately one-hour guided lesson to ensure you feel confident on the water. You’ll also be provided with a manual that includes instructions for navigating, mooring, going through locks and more.
Yes, the boats are controlled by just a steering wheel and a throttle. In fact, they’re so easy to operate that you don’t even need prior boating experience or a boating license.
All boats are equipped with a grill, oven, fridge and French press — as well as towels and bed linens. Depending on which boat you rent, you may have additional amenities such as an air conditioner, microwave or al fresco dining area.
Dogs are welcome aboard Le Boat’s vessels. Just keep in mind that you will need to pay an additional cleaning fee per dog.
If you’re travelling with a small dog that can be carried, you can take your pick from Le Boat’s entire collection of boats. Travelling with a large dog? Salsa, Tango, Calypso and all boats in the Vision fleet are recommended as they do not have ladder-style steps or stairs.
Le Boat destinations include Belgium, Canada, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands and Scotland.
Le Boat has five different classifications of river and canal boats:
- Budget boats have basic features and fittings, and traditional décor.
- Comfort boats come in a variety of designs and styles. They have electric-flush toilets and the ability to connect to a shore power supply.
- Comfort Plus boats are a bit more spacious than Comfort boats and come with a few extra amenities, including BBQ hotplates and deck seat cushions.
- Premier boats have saloon and kitchen areas with large windows, as well as an impressive top deck.
- Luxury boats are like floating hotels. They are meticulously designed and equipped with state-of-the-art technology to make navigating a breeze.
The beauty of going on these river cruises and canal boat adventures is that you get to be in charge — where you moor and what activities you do is entirely up to you. That said, there are suggested Le Boat itineraries that you can use to help guide your voyage.
Le Boat’s vessels can accommodate between 2–12 people, making it a great option for all sorts of travellers — from couples and small groups to larges families.
