Exploring Beijing's hutongs (narrow streets or alleyways) and major shopping streets gets you amongst the life of the city but it's helpful to know where to start!
Qianment Dajie, running north-south from Tiananmen Square, has been a shopping strip for more than 500 years. Chinese restaurants, neon signs and clothing stores now all vie for space along this red lantern-flanked street. It's intersected by Dazhalan Hutong, with its old Chinese medicine stores, handicrafts for sale and fine silk clothing along its length.
Liulichange is south of Beijing's Peace Gate and is a Chinese cultural feast. Here you'll find 750 metres of calligraphy, art, antiques, books and paintings. Merchants will constantly try to entice you into their stores, but feel free to just browse and take in all the sights and sounds.
The best-know shopping area though, is Wangfujing. It's bursting with pedestrians and is home to the city's largest bookshop: the Wangfujing Bookstore.
