Berlin is known globally as an architecture hub, and thus boasts some of the world's most beautiful buildings, both old and new. One of the city's most famous modern buildings is the concert hall of Berlin Philharmonic, designed by Hans Scharoun and completed in 1963. A product of the Expressionist movement, the building's abstract design could easily be mistaken for a 21st century creation.
An architectural masterpiece of a very different flavour is the Berlin Cathedral, located on Museum Island in the Spree river. This impressive building was built in 1905 and boasts an iconic dome reminiscent of that of Saint Peter's Basilica. While you're there, be sure to explore the nearby museums, particularly Pergamon Museum - an architecural delight itself.
For a taste of the more modern side of Berlin architecture, visit the Sony Centre, preferably at night. Designed by Helmut Jahn, this innovative and unique set of buildings focuses on transparency and abstract shapes, adding a serious dose of spice to Berlin's already magnificent cityscape.
