Bounded by a whole lot of water – Puget Sound (and arm of the Pacific) and Lake Washington – there are several water-borne ways to explore Seattle. Kayaking, cruising, yatching, and virtually any other type of boating you can contemplate, is catered for. From guided tours to paddle-yourself affairs, when the sun is out, the experience on the water is lovely. But choose your times for a clear-sky trip (late June to September) because this slice of the world is prone to extended periods of rain and overcast days.
If you're like the locals and enjoy your pedal power, cycle the 42-kilometre Burke Gilman Trail, linking the Locks on Puget Sound to Bothell Landing, the Sammamish River Traily and Marymoor Park. The Olympic Mountains (to a height of about 2,500 metres) are west of the city, and afford a host of opportunities to hike in very different terrain. If you've worked up a thirst and an appetite on your adventure, drop in to one of the city's lauded microbreweries (with restaurants), including Redhook Ale Brewery, Pike Brewing Company and Pyramid Alehouse.
