For a curious trip back in time, head to the historic Pioneer Square district and take an Underground Tour to see the subterranean history of the city. The Great Seattle Fire of 1899 destroyed 25 square blocks of the city. The rebuilding effort used bricks and masonry (rather than timber, which had formed the bulk of the dwellings previously) and elevated the town by one storey, leaving an underworld to be explored today. But of course the area's history extends well before this time.
Native Americans have been in the region for at least 4,000 years and the significant Asian and Scandinavian contributions to the Pacific Northwest can be seen at the Wing Luke Asian Museum and Nordic Heritage Museum. A popular venue mixing history, contemporary taste (literally) and charm is the Pike Place Market. Established as farmer's markets in 1907, today their continues to be fresh food and flowers, with buskers to boot.
You may have heard these parts are known for being wet and overcast – it's true but the locals don't care. For clear skies it's best to come in July or August but otherwise just take a Seattleite's lead and get out into the city. Walk, cycle, run and boat, whatever takes your fancy.
