  • Day 1 Arrive Fukuoka, Kyushu Welcome to Kyushu, Japan's southernmost major island, a remote subtropical paradise famous for steaming volcanoes and natural hot springs. The 'island of fire and healing waters' is off the typical tourist trail and offers dynamic landscapes, unique culture, world-class cuisine and hospitality distinctive to countryside Japan. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel in Fukuoka, a modern gateway city to Kyushu. Accommodation: the b hakata or similar
  • Day 2 Fukuoka The energetic city of Fukuoka is famed for unique yet delicious food and bustling nightlife. Begin your adventure with a visit to Dazaifu Tenmangu, an impressive shrine set in the historic town of Dazaifu, popular with students praying for good exam results. Next, step back in time to life as it was during the Meiji and Taisho periods at Hakata Machiya Folk Museum. Then, discover the age-old tradition of sake brewing at Hakata Hyakunenkura, the only sake brewery remaining in Hakata. Tonight, savour the local flavours of Fukuoka with a delightful welcome dinner.   • Day 3 Fukuoka - Nagasaki Set off for the historic port city of Nagasaki, once synonymous with western trade. Begin with a visit to the tiny artificial island of Dejima, a historic Dutch trading post that once was the only district permitting foreign presence. Stroll around the picturesque harbourside restaurants at Dejima Wharf for lunch on your own accord. In the afternoon, pay respects with a visit to Nagasaki Peace Park, established to commemorate the atomic bombing of the city during World War II.   • Day 4 Nagasaki - Unzen - Kumamoto Enjoy a complete change of scenery at the enthralling town of Unzen, famous for steaming volcanic landscapes and a world enveloped by hot spring gas fumes. The atmospheric sight and smell of mega-hot steam and acidic sulphur billowing from the fumaroles gives rise to the name Unzen Hell (Unzen Jigoku). Proceed to Unzen Toy Museum, a nostalgic triple-story house packed with the cutest antique Japanese toys. Conclude a fascinating day travelling to the stunning castle city of Kumamoto.   • Day 5 Kumamoto - Mt Aso - Beppu, Oita No visit to Kumamoto is complete without a visit to Kumamoto Castle, considered one of Japan's most impressive structures. The castle finally reopened after 2016 earthquakes ravaged parts of the castle, requiring 20 years to fully repair. Nearby, the photogenic lakeside garden of Suizenji Park is a beautiful depiction of a classical Japanese garden. Stroll around the park to find one of the finest miniature garden representations of Mt Fuji. Then, take a break from lively urbane neighbourhoods of Kumamoto and travel towards captivating Mt Aso, the largest active volcano in Japan and among the largest in the world. From the vantage point at Kusasenri Plateau, take in spectacular grassland scenery, caldera cones and crater ponds.   • Day 6 Beppu Free Day Beppu, the "pride of Oita, the onsen prefecture", is home to the largest number of hot springs sources in Japan. Alternatively, join an optional Beppu Day Tour (at your own expense). Take in panoramic views of famous Yufuin town and nearby mountains at the Sagiridai scenic viewpoint.   • Day 7 Beppu - Hiroshima Today, embark on a road trip to Honshu, Japan's main island. As you bid farewell to beautiful Kyushu, make one final photo stop at splendid Kokura Castle, nestled in the charming town of Kitakyushu. As the only castle in Fukuoka prefecture, it is one of the most popular places to view cherry blossoms.   • Day 8 Hiroshima Free Day The modern city and prefecture of Hiroshima is defined by an inseparable connection to peace, shrines and museums. Hiroshima is also famous for savoury okonomiyaki pancakes, saltwater eel (anago) and other culinary delights. Enjoy a free day to explore the city's cultural wonders at your own pace. Alternatively, join an optional Miyajima Day Tour (at your own expense). Ferry across to Miyajima island and explore Itsukushima Shrine, famous for its giant torii gate "floating" in the sea, one of the most photographed wonders of Japan. In the afternoon, visit Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and Atomic Bomb Dome, the only structure left standing at the site of the first atomic bombing in 1945.   • Day 9 Hiroshima - Himeji - Osaka Begin your journey to the Kansai region with a visit to Himeji Castle, regarded as Japan's most spectacular castle for its elegant white appearance atop a hill, and considered the finest surviving example of early 17th century architecture. Next to the castle, stroll around Kokoen Garden, a prototypical Japanese garden featuring themed ponds and lovely bridges, beautiful in any season. On non-cloudy days, the 5th station offers commanding mountain views over the Fuji Five Lakes and Hakone National Park. Next, soar high on the Hakone Ropeway over the hilltops to volcanic Owakudani Valley and explore the dramatic hot springs of Mt Hakone.
