Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Lima Welcome to Peru and its colonial capital Lima! Make your own way to our joining hotel, where we have a group meeting at 6pm to meet your tour leader and fellow travellers. Spend the rest of the day exploring the city or relaxing after your journey.
  • Day 2 - Ica and Huacachina Lima - Ballestas Islands - Huacachina. Today we have an early start to beat the rush hour and drive south to Paracas National Park. Here we catch a local boat for an included trip to the Ballestas Islands, where we get the chance to view incredible resident wildlife such as Humboldt penguins and large colonies of sea lions.

After lunch, we continue south to reach Huacachina, a stunning desert oasis town surrounded by palm trees and towering sand dunes. Tonight we have the option to spend the evening sand boarding and dune buggying.
  • Day 3 - Nazca Huacachina - Nazca. This morning we continue our drive south to reach Nazca, a village that’s world-famous for being home to the mysterious Nazca Lines. Created over 1,000 years ago, the Nazca Lines are a series of geometric shapes and figures etched into the desert plateau and their purpose remains unknown to this day. This afternoon we have the option of a 30-minute flight in a small aircraft to enjoy awe-inspiring views of the Nazca Lines from above.
  • Day 4 - Puerto Inca Nazca - Purto Inca. Today we enjoy an included visit to the ancient sites of Chauchilla Cemetery and the Cahuachi Pyramid, which was once one of the most important ceremonial centres for Nazca culture in Peru. In the afternoon we continue our drive to Puerto Inca, a coastal resort boasting scenic views of the Pacific Ocean, and camp on the beach.
  • Day 5-6 - Arequipa Puerto Inca - Arequipa. Today we start our drive inland and journey to the beautiful city of Arequipa. Also known as the ‘White City’, Arequipa boasts stunning colonial buildings built from soft, white volcanic rock. The city is also set against a breathtaking backdrop of the snow-covered volcano El Misti, salt lakes, thermal springs and high-altitude deserts.

Day 6 offers free time to explore independently or take one of our optional activities. Perhaps go whitewater rafting on the Chili River, learn how to make Peruvian cuisine in a cooking class or tour Arequipa's Santa Catalina Convent.
  • Day 7-8 - Colca Canyon Arequipa - Chivay. This morning we enjoy some more free time in Arequipa, before driving to the highland town of Chivay after lunch. This rural town is the gateway to the magnificent Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world.

On day 8 we take a short drive to some of the best viewpoints along the canyon. We spend a good amount of time at each one to give ourselves the best possible chance of spotting the canyon’s resident condors. These birds are among the largest in the world that can fly, with a wingspan of over 3 metres. On our way back to Chivay we visit a couple of local communities, then spend the afternoon either exploring or taking an optional trip to bathe in the nearby hot springs.
  • Day 9 - Raqchi Chivay - Raqchi. Driving through the stunning Peruvian highlands, we reach the small village of Raqchi where we enjoy a homestay as guests of the local villagers. This evening we take part in a traditional Quechua religious ceremony and listen to the local musicians play.
  • Day 10-11 - Cusco Raqchi - Cusco. This morning we explore the Temple of Wiracocha, one of the largest Inca sites in Peru, before visiting a local artisan centre to see a pottery demonstration. In the afternoon we drive to Cusco, the former Inca capital and gateway to the world-famous ruins of Machu Picchu.

On day 11 we have free time to explore the captivating city of Cusco. Perhaps take part in an optional activity such as mountain biking, white-water rafting or a Spanish class. In the evening we have a full briefing with our local trekking guides on the Wild Andes and Classic Inca Trails to prepare us for the next few days.
  • Day 12 - Sacred Valley The next four days will be spent either trekking on our pioneering Wild Andes route, on the Classic Inca Trail or, for those not wishing to hike, enjoying free time in Cusco and a guided tour of the Sacred Valley on our Train package.

Both the Wild Andes and Classic Inca Trek are of similar length and difficulty, however the Wild Andes trek sees far fewer crowds and takes you through more pristine Andean scenery. Although you won’t trek to Machu Picchu via the famous Sun Gate, you will arrive well-rested after spending the night before in a comfortable hotel. For more information please refer to the Trip Notes.

Option 1 - Wild Andes Trek
We leave Cusco early this morning to enjoy a fascinating tour of the ruined temples of Sacsayhuaman and to visit the small Quechua-speaking village of Chinchero for a traditional weaving demonstration.
