Australia’s Best Big Things

Relive the golden days of an Aussie road trip with a stop at some of the country’s best big things.

The Big Bundy

Visit the giant bottle of rum at the Bundaberg Rum Distillery, then stay for a tour that traces the birth of Bundy rum in 1888 to the award-winning distillery it is today. You can even take home your own rum blend.

The Big Pineapple

This heritage-listed giant piece of tropical fruit is as Queensland as it gets. Families love it for the Wildlife HQ zoo on site and there are plans to build a food market that sells local produce.

The Big Banana

You really can’t miss this bright yellow banana when driving through Coffs Harbour. Complete with mini golf, waterslides and the best banana thick shakes in town, it’s big on flavour and experience.

The Big Golden Guitar

You know you’ve arrived in the country music capital whenyou spot this icon on the wayinto town. There’s a cafe and music shop, and strangely, a Collectors Museum with sporting memorabilia.

The Big Ned Kelly

An icon of Australia’s bushranger history, this 6m statue marks the place where, after the final siege of the Kelly Gang in 1880, arguably Australia’s most famous last bushranger was caught.

The Big Penguin

Possibly the cutest of the Big Things, the Big Penguin was built in 1975 for the centenary of the town of Penguin. It’s not alone though; the Big Penguin forms part of a colony along with rubbish bins adorned with penguins.

The Big Rocking Horse

First came a 5m-tall timber giraffe, then a series of rocking horses, before eventually the 18m-tall Big Rocking Horse opened in 1981. But why? It was all part of an elaborate advertising campaign for the adjoining timber toyshop. Once you're done tasting wine from nearby Adelaide Hills cellar doors, stay awhile to climb the viewing platform and meet the animals at the onsite park, before making a purchase in the toyshop, of course.

The Big Lobster

Larry the Lobster, a 17m-tall crustacean, is one of the biggest Big Things on the map. He was restored to his former glory in recent times after falling into disrepair and now Larry and the adjoining restaurant are for sale.

The Big Ram

This Big Thing was built to celebrate the district's role in the wool industry. While it's not as big as the Big Merino in Goulburn, NSW, what sets the Big Ram (aka Giant Ram) apart is that it’s anatomically correct and to scale. Read: that's one wellhung ram.

The Big Boxing Crocodile

Inspired by the boxing kangaroo used in Australia’s 1983 bid for the America’s Cup, the croc is an icon of the tropics and a popular pit stop on the road from Darwin to Kakadu.
